Happy Birthday, Jake!

Dear Jake,

You know when you look back on your life and realize that there was a certain event that was a turning point for you, your purpose, your life? An event that made everything fall into place and gave your life meaning?

That moment for me was when I had you. My perspective changed from selfish to serving. I could see my own heart living and breathing outside my own body. It was thrilling, it was terrifying, it filled me with love and it hurt at the same time.  I knew with each birth that the special moments we shared being one body would never be the same. They would change day to day and I would never be able to hold on to those special moments that ran through my fingers like water. So fast, you've grown so damn fast.  I never thought 17 years could pass in a blink of an eye, but here I am, the mother of a 17 year old boy. A man, you tell me.

Yesterday afternoon you listed all the things you can now do without me or my permission: buy spray paint (the son of a crafter for sure!),  go to a rated R movie, get married, work full time... The list went on and on.  I laughed with you, but it hurt my heart too, because I know that in order to do this job right you have to leave me.  You has to go out into the world and buy spray paint for yourself!

I think about how fast the last 17 years has passed and I'm not ready. I'm not ready for you to buy spray paint yet! I have such a short time left with you before you goes off to college and every day that passes is one more day down.  If 17 years went by in a blink, what am I supposed to do with a year and a half left?? Will my heart swell as you set off on your own or will it break?

This little baby I held in my arms (you) gave my life purpose. I was put on this earth to create and raise you 3 beautiful boys and it all started with you, my first one. You let me know I could do it and were patient with me as I learned.  I love with all my heart.

Happy birthday, Jaker Baker, I am so proud God chose me to be your mom and you to be my son. You make me proud every day and I cannot wait to see what life has in store for your next 17 years.

Love,

Mama

Skincare Sunday - Tools for Christmas!

I have a ton of customers adding tools to their wish lists this Christmas!  Rather than a trip to the spa every week for facials, masks or extraction treatments have the tools at your fingertips at home.

Each of these tools help accelerate the effectiveness of the regimens.

The Macro Exfoliator is a  rechargeable device that uses a diamond tip and gentle suction to exfoliate dead skin cells from your skin once a week.  As always, Rodan+Fields advertising budget is $0, yet we still get tons of press from beauty editors that try it and like it!

The AMP MD Roller is our answer to the treatment called micro-needling.  What does micro-needling do? It's a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains fine needles. The needles are used to create a superficial puncture in the skin to create a controlled skin injury.  The skin, in turn, increases production of collagen and elastin in that area resulting in improved skin texture and appearance, and a reduction in scars, pore size and stretch marks.

Coty Yagatich incorporated tools into her regimens and had results after 2 months of consistent use:

Tammy Cofield used just the Amp Md along with Reverse, Microdermabrasion Paste, and Eye Cream:

Right now, a regimen bundle including a tool is reduced by 20% for the collection.
Put great skin on your Christmas list!

It's a Make-Ahead Thankgiving

I hate to be stuck in the kitchen while everyone else has fun. I hate more that guests feel like they have to help me when I'm in there! I want to enjoy the holiday, have a few Bloody Mary's, and kick back while things cook themselves.

After cooking Thanksgiving dinner for 20+ people for the past 15+ years, I've learned that nearly everything can be made ahead and just stuck in the oven at the proper time (don't laugh, but I actually have a timeline written down on paper so I can keep track of all the baking times. It's like a science!)

Here are all the recipes I actually make every Thanksgiving and their make-ahead instructions.  The only thing I really worry about on the day is the Martha Stewart Parchment Turkey.

I add all the ingredients but the baking powder and put in an airtight container and refrigerate.  Stir in baking powder when ready to bake, pour in prepared pan and bake!

I make this entire recipe ahead of time using a bread pan. Keep in fridge until ready to bake covered in foil. Uncover and bake Thanksgiving morning.

I have used this recipe since I started cooking Thanksgiving dinner 15+ years ago! I actually make it near the beginning of the month and put it in the freezer until the day before.  Thaw and heat - add some juices from the bird at the end. Easy Peasy!

We still all love this classic green bean casserole. Mix and cover and refrigerate. Put onions on just before baking or they will get soggy!

These potatoes can be made the day before and put into the crock pot to reheat. If you put a liner in, you don't even have to wash the pot!

Make this up the day before but add an egg in addition to the ingredients listed, cover and refrigerate. Before baking, drizzle a little more warm broth, recover and bake. If you want crispy edges, uncover the last 15 minutes of baking.  If you like it soft and pudding-like, add more broth and reheat in crock pot!

Make up the bottom of the casserole and spread in pan. Mix the topping and place in a ziploc baggie.  Stick the casserole, covered, in the fridge and sprinkle with topping right before baking.

This pie is to-die-for! My absolute fave Pumpkin Pie!  You can make the crust the day before and form in to discs and wrap in plastic wrap and store in fridge overnight.  Whip up the filling in the morning and bake. I like to serve at room temp with freshly whipped cream.

Pop open a can of cranberry sauce and you're good to go!  I'm always game to add something new to my lineup, what is your favorite Thanksgiving recipe?

A Birthday and a Cookie

The Soul Sisters got together a few weeks ago for a birthday.  Marzipan turned another year older so we showered her with hand made gifts:

Joy made this sweet little bag from a skirt!

Treat Girl knit this sweater pillow!

While there, we ate the BEST sugar cookies while there and have been trying to duplicate them ever since.  We analyzed the taste, texture, color, and shape over Chai and coffee and googled the heck out of it and FINALLY came up with this recipe! They were perfect! (Thanks, DelectablyMine!)

Thick and Chewy Sugar Cookies

Ingredients
  • 1 1/4 cup (250 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 sticks (225 g) butter, melted browned butter
  • 3 egg yolks (large)
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups (180 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (127 g) bread flour
  • 1/4 cup (20 g) nonfat dry milk powder (I found a can of buttermilk powder in the baking aisle)
  • 1/4 cup (30-35 g) cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
Directions
Cream together the butter and sugar. Add in eggs and vanilla.
In a separate bowl mix together the dry ingredients. Add to the wet mixture and mix until combined. Chill the dough in the fridge for at least an hour.
Using a scoop, scoop the cookie dough onto a parchment covered cookie sheet. Don't press down, and bake at 350 for 8-10 minutes until almost done, then pull them out and let them finish baking and set  on the baking sheet (5-10 minutes). Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frost with confectioner's sugar glaze or American Buttercream!

Why You Should Wash Your Face

Why Wash Your Face?

“Because the world is gross and dirty. Your own skin is covered in a layer of dead skin cells, bacteria, pollutants, viruses and dirt. (In fact, every single day you shed about 50 million dead skin cells)   And that layer will get thicker over time unless you take drastic action and wash your face twice a day. Washing our faces not only gets rid of various antigens (tiny unwanted foreign invaders), it also provides our skin much-needed hydration. (This is why it's important to moisturize your skin shortly after bathing; the moisturizer's function is to seal moisture within the skin.)”
-The Discovery Website

Why Wash with Rodan + Fields?

She was recently named one of America’s Top Dermatologists.”
-Examiner.com

So Proud to have those 2 Doctors in my corner! Smart, strong women who have given their business to us to share and learn and grow for ourselves.

Bottom Line?

Everyone should be washing their face. Period. But there are so many products out there, why are we the best? We use 4 Step, multi-med therapy: BAM!

If you wash your face with ONE bottle, two things can happen: nothing, or everything.

If a wash does what it should, it will pull impurities out of your skin, open up the pores, and clean the dead skin, dirt, and bacteria away from your face. If it is a cheap wash, it will just push the junk around your skin instead of cleaning it off.  (Two simple facts to add; bubbles and foam=bad. They destroy the delicate lipid barrier of the skin and ruin the skins natural moisture process. If you have oily skin, it will become more oily; if you have dry skin, it will become more dry.)

SO, let’s say you have a “good” wash and you are successfully cleaning your face. Then what? Take advantage of the open pores and get those important ingredients in while you have the chance (approximately 3 minutes to be exact from the time you wash). A toner is extremely important for delivering ingredients deeper into the skin. Liquid is much less dense than a cream, BUT it also balances the ph level of your face, resolving oil or dryness and killing the bacteria that may still be stuck deep inside the pores.

So why a step 3? Because your pores are STILL open to the environment.  A third step is required to close the pores, keep the good ingredients in, and the bad stuff OUT: pollutants, bacteria, environmental elements, etc. Without that third step you mind as well not even wash your face.

While you are washing the bad stuff away, it is nearly impossible to avoid losing some of the good stuff. Restoring the skin's natural moisture will slow down the aging process, ease sensitivity, and keep your face feeling and looking better in general.
So what's the fourth step? Sunscreen is a MUST. No ifs, ands, or buts. Even one day in the sun unprotected can reverse a year of good skin care.
